ABU DHABI – Prominent experts, space scientists, and researchers from around the world will participate in an E-Symposium discussing the role of space in sustainable development being organized by TRENDS Research & Advisory. Dr. Simonetta Di Pippo, Director of the United Nations Office for Outer Space Affairs (UNOOSA), will deliver the keynote speech, highlighting the role of the space sector in achieving Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) 2030.
Masayuki Goto, Co-Founder of Space Cubics, Japan, will highlight the role of the space sector in technological advancement. Goto has been behind numerous equipment development projects installed in the International Space Station and has development, launch, and operation experience in a wide field. He was also engaged in the Japanese Experiment Module (JEM) flight director’s real-time operations on the JEM at the JAXA mission control room.

The E-Symposium – The Role of Space in Sustainable Development – will be live-streamed on the TRENDS YouTube channel https://www.youtube.com/user/TrendsRA and other social media platforms at 6pm UAE time on Wednesday, July 8, 2020.

Eng. Fatima Al Shamsi, Space Policies Specialist at the UAE Space Agency, United Arab Emirates, will speak about the National Space Strategy 2030 and its role in achieving sustainability. Besides fulfilling her core duties of supporting the development and governance of the National Space Strategy 2030 and the development of reports related to space economy and sustainability, she also actively participates in the work related to the United Nations Committee on the Peaceful Uses of Outer Space.

The challenges to ensuring the sustainability of outer space activities in support of sustainable development will be highlighted during the symposium by Dr. Peter Martinez, the Executive Director of Secure World Foundation, United States. Dr. Martinez has been involved in capacity building in space science, technology, and workforce development for scientific and technical fields. He has also served as the Chairman of the UN Committee on the Peaceful Uses of Outer Space and the Scientific and Technical Subcommittee’s Working Group on the Long-Term Sustainability of Outer Space Activities.

Mr. Bernard Foing, Senior Scientist and Advisor to the European Space Agency (ESA), The Netherlands, will address international cooperation and the future of space explorations. Thi Hien Nguyen, the Executive Director and Founder of Spaceconnex, Germany, will deliver the closing marks.
