As part of the Future TRENDS Forum: The World in 2071, TRENDS Research & Advisory is organizing an e-symposium on Tuesday (February 2, 2021) at 7 pm UAE time (+4GMT). The symposium will highlight space’s strategic dimensions, its growth potential, industrialization, weaponization, and commercialization.

Leading experts working in the space industry and engaged in academic research will take part in the two-hour-long e-symposium – The Impact of Space in Redesigning the Humanity’s Future: New Frontiers of Geopolitics, Innovation, and Discovery. Dr. Simonetta Di Pippo, Director of the United Nation Office Outer Space Affairs (UNOOSA), Austria, will deliver the keynote speech.

Following will be the key topics to be discussed during the symposium:

Dr. Namrata Goswami, a subject matter expert at Futures Lab, USA, is scheduled to speak on space’s strategic dynamics and its geopolitical dimensions and policy implications. Dr. Goswami is an independent scholar on space policy, great power politics, and ethnic conflicts.

Goals and prospects of upcoming space missions will be the lecture’s subject to be delivered by Dr. Farouk El-Baz, the Retired Director of the Center for Remote Sensing at Boston University, United States of America. Dr. El-Baz is a Fellow of the Academy of Sciences for the Developing World and represents it at the United Nations.

Dr. Bleddyn Bowen, International Relations Lecturer at the University of Leicester, United Kingdom, will speak on the militarization and weaponization of space and its consequences for international security. Dr. Bowen is an academic expert in space warfare and space policy and has appeared before the UK House of Commons Brexit and Defense select committees on space policy.

Speaking on the new era of space innovation and its key drivers and strategic objectives will be Dr. Yarjan Abdul Samad, a Senior Research Associate and Senior Teaching Fellow at the University of Cambridge, United Kingdom. Dr. Samad’s research work is based on developing materials for electronics, health, and space-based technologies.

Mr. Jean-Jacques Tortora, Director of the European Space Policy Institute, Austria, will address the symposium on the critical subject of the space economy’s growth and potential, the global strategies, and best practices. From 2007 to mid-2016, Tortora was the Secretary-General of ASD-Eurospace, the European space industry trade association.

Human settlement and industrialization in space: planning priorities and main challenges will be the subject for William (Bill) Kemp, the Co-Founder/CEO at the United Space Structures (USS), USA. The USS has designed four different architectures and robotics systems for constructing large structures either on the moon or Mars within lava tubes.

Dr. Ivan V. Danilin, the Head of Science and Innovation Department at the Primakov National Research Institute of World Economy and International Relations (IMEMO), Russian Academy of Sciences, Russian Federation, will speak on the commercialization of space travel and tourism. Dr. Danilin serves on board of several expert groups of the Russian Ministry of Science and Higher Education, State Duma, and ROSATOM.

The E-Symposium will be live-streamed at TRENDS YouTube channel and its other social media platforms.
