MP Majumdar serves as Vice-Chair of the Subcommittee on International Human Rights of the Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs and International Development in the Canadian Parliament.
Continuing the research dialogue launched by TRENDS Research & Advisory during its research tour to Canada, it organized a panel discussion with Shuvaloy Majumdar
Member of Canadian Parliament for Calgary Heritage Canada. The discussion was attended by a group of TRENDS researchers and reflected the continuity of institutional communication, as well as the transition of dialogue from an exchange of visions to prospects for sustainable practical cooperation.
Majumdar serves as Vice-Chair of the Subcommittee on International Human Rights of the Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs and International Development in the Canadian Parliament. He also possesses extensive experience in foreign policy and counter-extremism—issues that were central to the discussion. This engagement built upon the in-depth dialogues that previously brought both sides together in Toronto and Ottawa as part of TRENDS’ research tour in Canada.
The panel discussion was held in the Conference Hall at the TRENDS headquarters in Abu Dhabi. It provided an opportunity to follow up on the outcomes of earlier meetings between TRENDS researchers and Canadian decision-makers within provincial and federal parliaments. During these engagements, the importance of deepening knowledge-based partnerships and integrating roles between think tanks and legislative institutions was emphasized, particularly with regard to countering violent extremism and enhancing institutional awareness within multicultural societies.

The panel discussion witnessed extensive interaction between Mr. Majumdar and TRENDS researchers, during which the nature of TRENDS work was reviewed. Attention was given to its research methodology, which is based on scientific analysis and the production of knowledge that supports decision-making. The discussion also addressed ways to transform research outputs into practical and applicable policies and recommendations – topics that received significant attention from the Canadian side during the research tour.
The discussions further explored prospects for enhancing joint research cooperation to counter extremism and to build on the outcomes achieved during the Canadian tour. This engagement reflected a shift in dialogue from theoretical debate toward the establishment of knowledge-based partnerships grounded in research, influence, and policy formulation.
Senior Researcher Fahad Al-Mahri, Head of the Dubai Office Sector at TRENDS, affirmed that organizing this panel discussion underscores that TRENDS’ tour to Canada was not a transient initiative. Rather, it constituted part of an extended dialogue aimed at strengthening linkages between think tanks and legislative and executive institutions, while promoting knowledge cooperation as an effective tool for addressing contemporary challenges.

This panel discussion extends a qualitative research tour conducted by TRENDS Research and Advisory in Canada, which included Toronto and Ottawa. The tour recorded a notable presence in both provincial and federal parliaments, in addition to high-level meetings, international media engagements, and the signing of memoranda of understanding with specialized institutions. These activities focused on countering extremism, consolidating the values of tolerance and coexistence, and enhancing the role of scientific research in supporting decision-making and anticipating future developments.
The tour also included honoring TRENDS Research & Advisory with the title of Personality of the Year 2025, in recognition of its international research role and its intellectual contributions to supporting peace, combating extremism, and promoting intercultural dialogue at both regional and international levels.
