TRENDS discusses research collaboration with South Africa’s DPRU

As part of their research tour in South Africa, a TRENDS Research and Advisory delegation visited the University of Cape Town and met with leading Development Policy Research Unit (DPRU) officials. The meeting explored prospects for research collaboration between TRENDS and DPRU, aiming to expand TRENDS’ outreach and strengthen its relationships with leading African think tanks.   Dr. Mohammed Al-Ali, CEO of TRENDS, led the discussions with Professor Haroon Bhorat, Director of DPRU. They emphasized the importance of think tanks and research institutions collaborating to produce insightful content, anticipate events and their implications, and contribute solutions to challenges with well-considered visions and strategies.   Dr. Hamad Al-Kaabi, CEO of Aletihad News Center, and TRENDS researchers, sector heads, and department directors attended the meeting. They discussed various topics of interest to Africa in general and South Africa in particular with their counterparts at DPRU. The discussion also covered research collaboration areas, including exchanging researchers and experts, organizing joint conferences and seminars, publishing research papers, and potential cooperation in training programs. Both sides affirmed their commitment to strengthening cooperative relations due to their significant impact on enhancing research and broadening its scope.   Dr. Mohammed Al-Ali expressed TRENDS’ interest in collaborating with DPRU, one of Africa’s most prestigious research institutions, to enhance research and provide opportunities for researchers from both sides to exchange expertise, enrich their work, and achieve their shared goals.   Professor Haroon Bhorat welcomed the TRENDS delegation and appreciated the visit and the meeting. He affirmed DPRU’s willingness to collaborate with TRENDS through its Cape Town office and commended its opening and insightful research vision. He noted that the opening of TRENDS’ office in Cape Town offers an opportunity for close communication and expanded cooperation. This highlights the office’s significant role in promoting research collaboration between the Arab world and Africa, which would contribute to sustainable development for both regions.
