Trends Research and Advisory has released a new study in English entitled “Asymmetric Warfare and Prospects of the Russia-Ukraine War.” The study was conducted by Trends’ researchers, Dr. Ayman Eldessouki, an expert at the Strategic Studies Section and Rahaf Al Khazraji, Head of Publication Section.
The study explores the nature of asymmetric warfare and its various strategies and tactics. It analyzes the Russian-Ukrainian war as one of the best-known recent examples of this type of warfare.
Both Russia and Ukraine resort to asymmetric strategies to achieve their goals, as Ukraine uses tactics such as civil resistance, guerrilla warfare and drones, while Russia supports separatists in Ukraine and also uses drones and mercenaries from the Wagner group.
The study details all aspects of asymmetric warfare in the Russia-Ukraine conflict, including cyberattacks, the role of drones, and the impact on civilians and infrastructure. It examines the impact of asymmetric warfare on the overall course of the war.
The study concluded that the Russian-Ukrainian war has turned into a war of attrition and deadlock prevailed on the front lines. The current state of the war is pushing both sides to heavily employ asymmetric warfare techniques.
The study indicated that in order to establish military superiority, each side needs to integrate complex warfare systems in both the symmetric and asymmetric domains.
