On 21 September, TRENDS Research and Advisory organized an international symposium titled “Promoting the Culture of Peace and Tolerance in the World: What We Need to Do” in partnership with Al-Ittihad newspaper to commemorate the International Day of Peace, observed annually on 21 September.
The seminar was attended by H.E. Sheikh Nahyan bin Mubarak Al Nahyan, UAE Minister of Tolerance and Coexistence; Monsignor Yoannis Lahzi Gaid, Former Personal Secretary of His Holiness Pope Francis and Member of the Higher Committee of Human Fraternity Brotherhood in Egypt; and H.E. Dr. Sultan Faisal Al-Remeithi, Secretary General of the Muslim Council of Elders. Other participants included H.E. Maqsoud Kruse, Strategic Communication Advisor, Ministry of Presidential Affairs; Dr. Omar Al-Darei, member of the UAE Fatwa Council; Rabbi Levi Duchman, Rabbi of the Jewish Community of the UAE; H.E. Dr. Koutoub Sano, Secretary General of the International Islamic Fiqh Academy; Dr. Muhammad Kamel Al-Maeni, Founder and President of the International Institute For Cultural Diplomacy in the UAE; Dr. Rashid Al-Khayoun, Researcher from Iraq; and Eli Epstein, President and Managing Director of Aminco Resources LLC of the USA.
The symposium focused on six main themes: religious discourse and the importance of countering hate speech and extremism; the Document on Human Fraternity as a framework for promoting the values of peace and tolerance around the world; promoting a culture of tolerance and peace through human rights; spreading the culture of peace and tolerance as a key for ending conflicts in the region and the world; how to promote the culture of peace and tolerance in the region and the world; and towards a common vision of a more peaceful and tolerant world.
