TRENDS Research & Advisory has emphasized that today’s media has become a powerful force capable of building bridges of human understanding or deepening divisions. It stressed the importance of using media to spread the truth and promote human fraternity in the face of rising polarization and disinformation.

This message was delivered during TRENDS’ participation, through its virtual office in Indonesia, in the international conference organized by the Higher Committee of Human Fraternity, in collaboration with the Indonesian International Islamic University, under the theme: Advancing Human Fraternity Amidst Global Uncertainties: Toward a More Peaceful and Prosperous World Civilization. The event is being held from July 29 to 30 in the Indonesian capital.

TRENDS participated in the third conference session, titled Media’s Role in Bridging Divides: Combating Disinformation and Promoting Human Fraternity. Abdulaziz Al-Marzouqi, Director of TRENDS’ Global Offices Department, delivered a keynote address in which he underscored the vital role of responsible media in upholding tolerance and dialogue values and reducing hate speech.

Al-Marzouqi said that the media bears a profound ethical and professional responsibility in a growing intellectual and social division. Rather than reinforcing a divisive “us versus them” narrative, he argued, media should strive to tell stories that highlight shared values and the humanity of others.

He added that research centers like TRENDS can support by providing credible scientific content, organizing constructive dialogue, and training media professionals in storytelling that promotes peace and coexistence.

Al-Marzouqi also stressed that combating disinformation is not an individual task but requires collective effort from governments, civil society organizations, academic institutions, and the media. This includes supporting responsible journalism, enhancing fact-checking skills, and fostering an informed media culture.

TRENDS’ participation in the conference came at the invitation of the Higher Committee of Human Fraternity, as part of its ongoing commitment to global dialogue and its contributions to promoting a culture of peace and mutual understanding, especially in a world facing increasing challenges that call for a more balanced and responsible media discourse.

The TRENDS delegation included Dr. Sultan Al-Rumeithi, Director of the Virtual Office in Indonesia; Rashed Al-Ketbi, Research Assistant; and Abdulaziz Al-Marzouqi, Director of TRENDS Global Offices.

The TRENDS team actively engaged in the conference sessions and discussions and attended the launch of a virtual academic center to support research, education, and religious tolerance.

Through its Jakarta virtual office, TRENDS, represented by its director and researchers, also participated in the official dinner held as part of the International Conference on Human Fraternity.

The conference discussed youth empowerment, social justice, education, media responsibility, and ethical innovation. By bringing together thought leaders and civil society figures from around the world, the conference underscored the role of research in addressing these vital issues.
