Tolerance values have become an urgent global necessity to achieve sustainable peace and enhance human dignity in a world facing increasing challenges of extremism, division, and conflicting identities, a new TRENDS Research & Advisory study has stressed.
The study – Promoting Tolerance for Sustainable Peace: A Global Imperative for the 21st Century – was prepared in English by TRENDS researcher Najla Al Midfa. It explains that tolerance is not only a moral value but also a foundation for building peaceful and inclusive societies and aligns with the goals of sustainable development, particularly the 16th Goal, which focuses on peace, justice, and strong institutions.
The study also warned of the growing prevalence of digital hate speech, political polarization, and cultural divisions, noting that these trends weaken trust in institutions and threaten the cohesion of societies.
The study reviewed successful experiences promoting tolerance, including the UAE’s Year of Tolerance, which contributed to reinforcing religious and cultural coexistence through pioneering initiatives such as the Abrahamic Family House. The study also examined national reconciliation efforts in South Africa through the Truth Commission, which helped to overcome the legacy of apartheid and to promote civil peace.
The study emphasized the importance of education in establishing a culture of tolerance by incorporating curricula that promote respect and diversity. It also highlighted the role of youth as ambassadors of tolerance through initiatives that foster dialogue and community engagement.
It stressed the need to develop effective digital governance to address online hate speech without compromising freedom of expression. It also advocated for comprehensive policies involving youth and women in peacebuilding efforts and decision-making processes.
The study concluded by emphasizing that promoting tolerance is a key strategy for addressing global challenges in the 21st century and calling for collective and coordinated action at the national and international levels to build a more peaceful, inclusive, and harmonious world.
