On 11 December 2023, TRENDS Research and Advisory, in collaboration with Al-Etihad News Center, hosted a symposium titled “The Future of Climate Finance in Light of COP28 Outcomes”. The symposium featured Dr. Nawal Al-Hosany, Permanent Representative of the UAE to the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA); Dr. Raidan Abdulaziz Al-Saqqaf, Resident Economist for the United Nations in the UAE; Eng. Belal Shqarin, Director of Climate Change at the Jordanian Ministry of Environment; Dr. Hamad Al-Kaabi, CEO of Al-Etihad News Center; and Dr. Mohamed Abdullah Al-Ali, CEO of TRENDS Research and Advisory.
The symposium addressed several issues, including the financing challenge, the activation of the Loss and Damage Fund, enhancing access to finance in developing countries affected by climate change, investment in renewable energy, reforming financial instruments related to climate finance, and climate adaptation issues.
The participants highlighted that the UAE has achieved significant breakthroughs at COP28 that had not been achieved in any previous climate conference. They also noted the success of the UAE in promoting a new culture of dialogue that has contributed to finding solutions to many outstanding issues, including climate finance.
