TRENDS Dialogue: “Building a Global Culture of Tolerance”

Within the framework of the strategic partnership between Al-Ittihad newspaper and TRENDS Research and Advisory, and as part of its first participation in the 2023 New Delhi International Book Fair, TRENDS organized its 11th dialogue under the title “Building a Global Culture of Tolerance”. The event saw the participation of a select group of experts, writers, and international diplomats at the Pragati Maidan Center in New Delhi, India. Speakers emphasized that tolerance is a universal human value that establishes a world characterized by goodness and love, serving as a fundamental guarantee for the stability and sustainable development of societies. They stressed the world’s need for effective tolerance and positive coexistence, making it a culture and a way of life. Priority on National Agendas Participants in the dialogue emphasized that building and consolidating a culture of tolerance should be a priority on both national and global agendas to confront the challenges and risks of extremism and terrorism. They clarified that tolerance is not just a concept or a term, but a comprehensive ethical system. TRENDS’ 11th dialogue began with welcoming remarks delivered by Warda Al-Menhali, Director of Corporate Communications at TRENDS, who moderated the session. She noted that TRENDS’ participation in the New Delhi Book Fair and the organization of this event embody its global vision and its keenness to enhance dialogue and cooperation with various research and knowledge institutions to achieve a common understanding on various issues that concern humanity. Ambassador Dr. Zikrur Rahman, Joint Secretary of the Association of Indian Diplomats, started the dialogue, emphasizing that tolerance is not just a philosophical term but a way of life and a fundamental pillar of life. Dr. Rahman stressed the role of think tanks in promoting tolerance. Keys to Security and Prosperity Dr. Mohammed Abdullah Al-Ali, CEO of TRENDS, emphasized that enhancing the values of tolerance and coexistence among nations and peoples is key to achieving global peace and prosperity and countering extremism, violence, and terrorism. He stressed the utmost importance of this in the current phase the world is going through, which is witnessing a noticeable increase in violent extremism and the widening of conflicts and wars. Dr. Al-Ali added that the extremist ideologies promoted by various extremist groups represent a major threat to the values of tolerance within societies and globally. He pointed out that India and the UAE serve as important examples of promoting a culture of tolerance globally, with India having the great legacy left by Mahatma Gandhi. As for the UAE, its initiatives in this field are ongoing, including its recent hosting and support of the signing of the Document on Human Fraternity. Shared Responsibility Hamad Al-Kaabi, Editor-in-Chief of Al-Ittihad newspaper, affirmed that the culture of tolerance is a major human value; it is not just a slogan but a behavior and practice that paves the way for dialogue and, consequently, mutual cooperation for the benefit of everyone. He stated that the media, with its institutions, platforms, and professionals, can promote a culture of tolerance, build bridges of dialogue and communication with all religious and cultural diversities, raise awareness, clarify facts, and immunize the youth against the dangers of isolationism and extremism. He pointed out that there are common factors between media institutions and think tanks, as they all contribute to content creation. Common Sense Dr. Salah Khamees Al-Juniabi, a researcher and analyst in international relations, emphasized the need for effective tolerance and positive coexistence, which play a role in bringing cultures closer. He noted that modern technology has bridged the distances between people, making them seem as if they live in one village or region. Al-Junaibi, who spoke in Arabic, English, and Urdu, addressed tolerance in all its forms, whether personal, societal, or global. He added that a culture of tolerance prevails when there is a focus on knowledge and building bridges of dialogue and cooperation.
