TRENDS Research and Advisory participated in the Second High-level Conference of the Forum on Global Action for Shared Development, held in China, to support knowledge dissemination and global development efforts.   Researchers Hamad Al-Hosani and Dr. Mohammed Youssef represented TRENDS at the conference. They emphasized the importance of localizing advanced technology in the Global South economies to achieve sustainable modernization. They underlined that possessing advanced technology enhances these countries’ competitiveness and enables them to participate actively in the global economy. The speech, delivered by researcher Hamad Al-Hosani, reviewed the challenges facing the Global South in localizing technology, including lack of investments in research and development, poor digital infrastructure, and lack of specialized skills.   Al-Hosani emphasized promising opportunities for technology localization in the Global South, citing these countries’ human and financial capital potential and their position on the global trade and investment map. Al-Hosani presented three possible scenarios for the future of the Global South in terms of technology localization: A successful scenario is one in which the Global South countries can build new pathways to support technology localization and accelerate access to technology. There is a slow progress scenario where countries face significant challenges in localizing technology, resulting in delays in achieving the desired modernization. A failure scenario occurs when countries in the South fail to localize technology, resulting in their decline in the global economy. Al-Hosani emphasized that the chances of success of technology localization strategies in the Global South depend mainly on the prosperity of South-South cooperation. He stressed the urgency of enhanced South-South collaboration in research and development, technology transfer, and capacity building.
