TRENDS Research & Advisory hosted the IRENA Growth Program 2025, organized in collaboration with the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA). The event brought together leading experts and researchers to discuss the latest trends in renewable energy transition and climate change mitigation.

Held at TRENDS’ conference hall in Abu Dhabi, the event featured key discussion sessions on green energy policies, focusing on energy storage advancements, AI-driven smart grids, carbon pricing policies, and ESG governance frameworks. Participants also examined the political landscape affecting renewable energy adoption, emphasizing that technology alone is not enough; strong policies and global cooperation are essential for a successful transition to renewable energy.

           

Moderated by Najla Al Zarooni, Program Officer, Country Engagement and Partnerships, IRENA, the program sessions featured Dr. Kamlesh Dookayka, Regional Programme Officer, Country Engagement and Partnerships, IRENA; TRENDS researchers Rashed Al-Hosani and Najla Al-Midfa; and Haifa Ben Ramadan, Academic Researcher, Sorbonne University. Participants emphasized the critical role of scientific research in developing innovative solutions for climate change, showcasing cutting-edge advancements in solar, wind, and hydropower technologies, as well as battery storage systems. They highlighted that scientific research not only drives technological breakthroughs but also shapes global policies for a cleaner and more sustainable future.

The IRENA Growth Program 2025 saw wide participation from young professionals, university students, and future industry leaders. The interactive sessions explored how remote sensing and geographic information systems (GIS) are used for renewable energy management and strategic decision-making in siting solar and wind power plants.

           

A special session focused on the challenges and opportunities in Africa’s renewable energy sector, where Dr. Kamlesh Dookayka, Regional Program Officer for Sub-Saharan Africa at IRENA, presented a comprehensive overview of Africa’s clean energy expansion efforts. He emphasized the growing demand for sustainable energy to support economic and social development across the continent.
