The book is titled The Muslim Brotherhood in International Relations: Roles and Prospects. It examines key turning points in the group’s history and explores its future within the context of international relations, while raising a central question about the possibility of the group’s decline or exit from the equations of international influence in the post-Arab Spring era.
The encyclopedia is an integrated intellectual and research project developed in the United Arab Emirates by a distinguished group of Emirati researchers, with contributions from international experts. It presents a rigorous academic model based on scientific analysis, aimed at deconstructing ideology and uncovering the intellectual, political, organizational, and economic dimensions of the group through a comprehensive, objective approach.
The encyclopedia project aims to publish 35 volumes covering various aspects of the group, of which 13 books have so far been completed, addressing issues related to its intellectual, organizational, media, and economic structures and their transformations over time.
Global Reach and Multiple Languages
As part of TRENDS Group’s strategy to strengthen its global knowledge outreach, the encyclopedia has received broad international attention. Several of its editions have been translated into 16 world languages in addition to Arabic, including English, French, German, Spanish, Hebrew, Chinese, Russian, Japanese, Indonesian, Malay, Turkish, Korean, Persian, Italian, and Urdu. This reflects the project’s ambition to reach a diverse global knowledge audience.
Hamad Al Hosani, Head of Political Islam Studies Sector at TRENDS Group, stated that the launch of the English edition of the thirteenth volume represents a qualitative extension of a comprehensive encyclopedic project that keeps pace with transformations in the group’s discourse and establishes a global dialogue on its thought, ideologies, and relations with transnational extremist organizations. He emphasized that confronting extremist ideology is not limited to the security dimension, but also includes intellectual, research, and cultural dimensions.
Noura Al Habsi, Head of Publishing Sector at TRENDS Group, affirmed that the translation and global expansion of the encyclopedia reflect the project’s success in conveying Emirati knowledge to international spheres. She noted that the objective is to provide reliable research content that enriches scholarly discussions of contemporary ideological phenomena.
Overview of the Thirteenth Volume
The book, The Muslim Brotherhood in International Relations: Roles and Prospects, analyzes the group’s functional role in the international arena through several key themes. Chief among them is the geopolitical dimension, in which the book examines and challenges the hypothesis that the group has been employed as a geostrategic tool by international powers to advance their interests.
The book also analyzes the duality between discourse and practice, highlighting the gap between the group’s ideological literature and its actual practices throughout its history. In addition, it reviews the international organization of the Muslim Brotherhood, its structure, spread across Europe and the United States, and its political roles. It further examines the relationship between the Brotherhood and extremist groups, as well as the nature of their interactions, whether cooperative or competitive. The book also analyzes the impact of the international environment on the Brotherhood’s project and the ways decision-makers have engaged with it.
